Please don’t rub it in ‘cuz the mess you made it almost killed my next-of-kin. Before you came around, Carthage wasn’t almost burning down. Please don’t be so mean; the mess you made, I made myself a drama queen. You never act your age. You’ll never change. It’s fine; I like you anyway. I met you on the thirteenth floor, an exile from the Trojan War. I met you on the thirteenth floor, exiled from the Trojan War. Thought you came to stay ‘cuz you looked so good and came from very far away and when we left the cave, I was hoping we could plan another escapade. It didn’t strike me then. I couldn’t comprehend it way back when, that once this war was over, you would leave and I would be alone again. You left me on the thirteenth floor. That’s why I don’t talk to you anymore. You left me on the thirteenth floor, exiled from the Trojan War. I can’t believe I let you in ‘cuz you made me the queen of Carthage again. I can’t believe I let you in ‘cuz you burned down the city of Carthage again. Thought you came to stay ‘cuz you looked so good and came from very far away and when we left the cave, I was hoping we could plan another escapade. It didn’t strike me then. No, I couldn’t comprehend it way back when, that once this war was over, you would leave and I would be alone again.

After Johnny told you that he wanted to say, he was sent away. He used to be my patient in bed number four. He isn’t there anymore. Now let’s get this story right back to the start ‘cuz I’d really like to know what you use for a heart. Yeah, you might not be so sure if you’d gotten here first. You’d be one less hand to hold for the visiting nurse. After Johnny told you that he wanted to stay, he was sent away. He used to be my patient in bed number four. He isn’t there anymore. After Johnny told you that he wanted to stay, he was lead astray. Just one fewer person who can make the parade on Veteran’s Day. Now let’s get this story right back to the start ‘cuz I’d really like to see what you use for a heart. Yeah, you might not be so sure had you gotten here first. You’d be one less wound to heal for the triage nurse. After Johnny told you that he wanted to say, he was sent away. He used to be my patient in bed number four. He isn’t there anymore. After Johnny told you that he wanted to stay, he was sent away. Just one fewer person who can make the parade on Veteran’s Day. I’d like to hear you explain this as best as you can, how this is the civic duty of the modern man ‘cuz maybe this is something that you could explain in your latest telegram to a family in pain.

Aquamarine 02:10
She said to take your memories and to throw them in the sea. “Pretend that I’m the water. You can walk all over me.” She’ll stay here for a while but then she’ll run and hide, very nearly swept in by the ever-rising tide. Now she’ll give you everything and say you stole it, too. Self-inflicted bruises always look like new tattoos. All that she can see now are the outlines of this scene; they come in cherry-redness and aquamarine. You’ll stay here for a while seeking shelter from the rain. So funny how ecstasy can feel so close to pain.

Army Nurse 05:25
When I saw you standing on the corner and I took one look in your eyes, that’s when I was instantly reminded of why true love always dies. When I saw you standing on the corner, well, I didn’t quite know what to do. Twenty years of American culture had finally gotten to you. Yeah! You’d already crashed your Lambretta when they finally gave me the word. Someone I knew that this would happen before it ever occurred. You thought I wanted it to last but I’m afraid that that isn’t the case. I was writing songs about our break-up before they ever took place. Yeah. You’d already crashed your Lambretta when they finally gave me the word. Someone I knew that this would happen before it ever occurred and you know that I try to be supportive but it sometimes feels like a curse to be the girl who heals your cuts and bruises: Cherry Ames, army nurse.

Watch Out 04:26

Standing on your own wondering whatever to do. You don’t believe it happens, then it happens to you. Thinking things were better before a list of crimes. It’s cheap nostalgia and fantasies of perfect times ‘cuz true love always dies. When they told her Johnny wouldn’t come back from war and she kept all his letters in a bureau drawer. One day, she took them out and through herself to the floor. She wasn’t waiting for anything, anymore ‘cuz true love always dies. True love always dies. There’s something in my heart that you will never see. I keep it in a box to have it buried with me and the only sign when that day comes will be a black sail rising by the setting sun ‘cuz true love always dies.

about

Pleasure Holiday Tacoma, Washington

Julia Fernández is a proudly obscure musician creating earworms for over 25 years. Known for catchy hooks and lyrical enjambment, her songwriting might be the bastard child of outsider music and that top 40 hit you can’t stop humming.
